More Than an Event: We don't run the conference because of who we are today. We run it because of who we want to become tomorrow.
Over the years, one thing has become increasingly clear: successful businesses don't happen by accident. The best organisations are intentional about the culture they create.
7 years ago, I came up with the idea of an annual MorePeople ‘Conference’. An ‘away day’ basically. Time to get off desk, an opportunity for people to get out of their comfort zones and help define and create some exciting futures for themselves.
Like MorePeople itself, each year it’s got bigger and better each year – Grantham, Birmingham, Leeds and this year, Paris!
The conference requires significant time, energy and investment. We willingly make that investment because we believe the returns are substantial. Better connected teams. More engaged people. Clearer communication. Stronger culture. Greater alignment. Improved retention. Increased ambition.
These things do not happen by accident. They require deliberate effort.
In a people business, investing in people is not a luxury. It is one of the smartest commercial decisions we can make.
That is ultimately why we continue to run the conference and why it remains such an important part of our calendar. Not because it's tradition. Not because it's expected. And certainly not because it's a jolly.
We do it because building a great company requires more than targets, systems and processes. It requires people who feel informed, connected, inspired and excited about the future.
Culture can’t simply be written down in a handbook and expected to flourish. It has to be experienced. It has to be discussed. It has to be lived.
The annual MorePeople Conference provides us with a unique opportunity to do exactly that.
We know that great companies have a crystal-clear vision that people understand and buy into. They have a shared purpose that people genuinely believe in. We had an opportunity to articulate the new and improved vision and purpose in Paris.
The best organisations don't need to constantly tell people to improve. Their people are naturally hungry to learn. They take ownership of their development because they care about being better tomorrow than they are today. They also strike the right balance between freedom and accountability. People understand what is expected of them, take responsibility for outcomes and are empowered to make decisions. In strong cultures, accountability isn't something imposed from above; it is something people expect from themselves and each other. These all feel true for the team at MorePeople too.
Importantly, great organisations create opportunities. People can see a future. They can see how they can grow. They can see pathways into new roles, greater responsibility and different experiences. Career mobility becomes a genuine reality rather than simply an aspiration.
The conference allows us to reinforce all of these principles. It gives us the opportunity to discuss where we are succeeding, where we need to improve and what we need to do to continue building an environment where talented people can thrive. All we can do is try and improve – like trying to get better at anything (like golf for example!), you never actually ‘complete it’, but the pursuit of better makes you… well… better.
Particular highlights for me this year were hearing from Lawrence, Jamie and Hannah about their journeys with the MorePeople. Really emotional, honest and inspiring stuff.
Eating together was great; seeing people working together in groups that perhaps they ordinarily wouldn’t was nice and gave a sense of belonging. Even the shared suffering on the steps up the Sacre Coeur was fun and it was the first time that the vision we’d had over the past 6 months really landed – the logistics for the whole thing went perfectly, actually.
One discussion that also resonated this year centred around something surprisingly simple: eating together.
On the surface, sharing meals can seem like a small thing. In reality, it is one of humanity's oldest forms of social bonding. Throughout history, communities, families and teams have gathered around food to build relationships, strengthen trust and create a sense of belonging.
The same applies in organisations.
When people sit together, share stories, laugh, listen and learn about one another, barriers come down. Trust grows. Relationships deepen. Teams become more connected. The conference deliberately creates those moments because strong cultures are built through human connection, not just business plans and performance metrics.
We spent a lot of time on ‘culture’ at the conference this year. Getting the team to help articulate and steer what they think we are all about. Research consistently shows that organisations with strong cultures outperform those with weaker cultures. They attract better talent, retain people for longer, collaborate more effectively, and ultimately achieve better results. Some studies suggest performance improvements of 20–30% when culture is working well.
One powerful insight was that a thriving culture requires fewer rules.
The idea that when people understand the vision, believe in the purpose, trust one another and take pride in their work, behaviours become self-reinforcing. Decision-making becomes easier. Collaboration becomes more natural. Progress accelerates.
Culture becomes the operating system behind everything else.
That is why our annual conference matters so much.
It is not simply about delivering presentations or sharing business updates. It is about bringing our culture to life. It is about creating alignment around where we are going, strengthening the relationships that help us get there and ensuring every person can see the role they play in the journey ahead.
Because ultimately, anyone can try to replicate some of our recruitment processes but they can’t replicate our culture – what makes us ‘us’.
The very best cultures push organisations into the future. And that is exactly what we want MorePeople's conferences do. Where next year, I wonder?
