We've all noticed it.
Hotter summers. Longer periods without rain. Sudden downpours that flood roads, gardens and growing areas. Winters that don't feel like winters anymore. Records being broken year after year, only to be broken again.
You don't need a scientist to tell you something has changed.
Anyone working in horticulture, landscaping, nursery production or greenhouse growing has seen it firsthand. Plants are flowering earlier, seasons are becoming less predictable, water is becoming increasingly precious and pests are appearing in places they were rarely seen before.
Climate change isn't some distant threat that might affect future generations.

Meanwhile, demand for electricity continues to increase.

Why does it feel like we're accelerating towards ever-greater consumption at a time where we should be learning how to live within environmental limits?
The Horticulture Industry Isn't the Problem...It's Part of the Solution
While governments and investors rush to fund AI infrastructure, there is a sector that has been quietly helping tackle climate change for decades: horticulture.
This isn't just about pretty gardens, colourful borders and hanging baskets. The horticulture industry sits at the heart of many environmental solutions.
Nurseries, growers, landscapers, arborists, garden centres and horticultural businesses produce the plants, trees and green spaces that absorb carbon, support biodiversity, improve air quality and help cool our increasingly overheated towns and cities. Yet despite all of this, the sector is often overlooked when conversations turn to investment and climate policy.
Ironically, it is also one of the industries most exposed to the effects of climate change.
Growers are dealing with extreme temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, flooding, drought and increasingly unpredictable growing seasons. Greenhouse operators face rising energy costs. Water restrictions can threaten production. New pests and diseases are emerging as temperatures increase.
For many businesses, adapting to climate change is no longer a future challenge.
It's a daily reality.
And as consumers, we're all affected.
When growers struggle, costs rise.
Plants become more expensive to produce. Landscaping projects become more costly. Garden centres face supply challenges. Certain varieties become harder to source. Food production can be affected. Which raises an uncomfortable question.
If we're truly serious about tackling climate change, why are we investing billions into infrastructure that increases energy demand while comparatively little investment reaches industries that are directly improving environmental resilience?
Imagine if even a fraction of the money being directed towards AI data centres was invested in tree planting programmes, urban greening initiatives, water management systems, sustainable growing technologies and large-scale biodiversity restoration.
Imagine if green infrastructure was treated with the same urgency as digital infrastructure.
The benefits would be enormous.
Cleaner air, cooler cities, healthier ecosystems, greater biodiversity, improved food security & more resilient communities.
Perhaps it's time to stop treating horticulture as a lifestyle industry and start recognising it as what it really is:
A critical part of our environmental infrastructure.
Because while AI may help us write emails faster, analyse data more quickly and generate information in seconds, a tree still absorbs carbon.
A garden still supports pollinators.
A green space still cools a city.
And those benefits are becoming more valuable every year.
The Forgotten Value of Green Spaces
Perhaps the greatest irony is that while billions are being invested in digital infrastructure, the industries that help mitigate the effects of climate change often receive a fraction of the attention.
Trees absorb carbon, plants cool urban environments, gardens create habitat for wildlife, green spaces improve physical and mental wellbeing and vegetation helps manage stormwater and reduce flooding.
The horticulture and landscaping industries are not luxury sectors.
They are essential services that make communities healthier, more resilient and better equipped to deal with a changing climate.
Every tree planted, every pollinator-friendly garden created and every sustainable landscape delivered contributes something tangible to the environment.
That's more than can be said for another warehouse full of servers.
Technology Isn't the Enemy
This isn't an argument against technology.
AI itself can deliver genuine benefits.
It can help growers optimise irrigation, monitor plant health, predict disease outbreaks, improve greenhouse efficiency and reduce waste.
Used responsibly, AI could become a valuable tool in helping agriculture and horticulture adapt to climate change.
The issue is not the technology.
The issue is the scale of investment, the speed of expansion and the apparent lack of public discussion about the environmental cost.
The problem arises when technological growth becomes the goal in itself.
When economic opportunity consistently outweighs environmental responsibility.
When every challenge is met with a solution that requires more infrastructure, more electricity and more consumption.
The real question is not whether AI is good or bad.
The real question is whether we are willing to have an honest conversation about the environmental cost of our digital future.
What Kind of Future Are We Growing?
Those of us who work with plants see the effects of climate change every day.
We understand the importance of soil, water, biodiversity and healthy ecosystems because our livelihoods depend on them.
Perhaps that's why the current rush towards AI infrastructure feels unsettling.
We're told to think sustainably.
We're encouraged to reduce our impact.
We're urged to protect the environment.
Yet at the same time, society appears willing to create entirely new sources of massive energy demand in pursuit of the next technological revolution.
Maybe the future shouldn't be a choice between technology and nature.
Maybe innovation should be judged not only by what it can do, but by what it costs the planet that supports us all.
Because if we lose sight of that, we risk learning a very hard lesson.
No amount of artificial intelligence can replace a stable climate.
No algorithm can recreate a healthy ecosystem.
No data centre can substitute clean water, fertile soil or thriving biodiversity.
Technology may shape our future.
But nature makes that future possible.
And perhaps it's time our investment priorities reflected that reality.
