Getting Closer to Food Manufacturing: A Day at the PPMA Show
Understanding the industries we recruit into has always been an important part of how we work at MorePeople.
It's easy to talk about manufacturing, engineering, automation and production environments from a desk. It's another thing entirely to get out into the industry, meet the people working in it and see the technology behind it first-hand.
That's exactly what we did on the final day of the PPMA Show.
Meeting clients and getting closer to the industry
The PPMA Show provided a great opportunity to catch up with clients and contacts from across the manufacturing and food & drink sector.
For us, these events are about much more than simply having meetings. They give us the chance to understand what businesses are working on, the challenges they're facing and how technology and automation are continuing to change manufacturing environments.
Having those conversations face-to-face gives us a much better understanding of the world our candidates are stepping into.
And that's particularly valuable when we're working with businesses on roles across engineering, operations, manufacturing, technical and supply chain.
Bringing the next generation of the team along (I sound old as hell)
One of the highlights of the day was bringing two of our newest team members along to experience the show.
For anyone new to food manufacturing recruitment, there's a huge amount to learn.
You can read job descriptions and talk to hiring managers all day, but seeing the equipment and processes behind the industry helps put everything into context.
The PPMA Show gave them the opportunity to see some of the machinery, automation and technology used across modern production environments and start building a better understanding of how food manufacturing actually works.
It's the kind of experience that's difficult to replicate from behind a laptop.
Seeing the technology behind food production
The show provided a great insight into just how much technology sits behind the food and drink products we take for granted. From processing and packaging to automation, robotics and production equipment, there was plenty to see across the show floor.
For a recruitment business, understanding this technology matters.
When we're speaking to candidates about engineering or manufacturing opportunities, we want to understand the environment they're going into. Equally, when we're speaking with clients, we want to understand the skills, experience and technical knowledge they need within their teams.
The more we understand the industry, the better conversations we can have with both sides.
Why industry experience matters in recruitment
Recruitment can sometimes become very transactional. A vacancy comes in, a CV goes out, interviews happen and, hopefully, someone gets hired.
But the best recruitment relationships tend to come from understanding the bigger picture.
That means understanding the businesses we work with, the people within them, the technology they use and the challenges they're trying to solve.
Days like our visit to the PPMA Show are part of that.
They help our team build genuine industry knowledge, give newer members of the business practical exposure to food manufacturing and, importantly, allow us to spend valuable time with the clients and contacts we work alongside.
Taking the learning back to MorePeople
Bringing our newest team members to events like PPMA is something we see as an important part of their development.
The food and drink industry is constantly evolving, and so are the technologies and skills businesses need.
The more exposure our team gets to those environments, the better equipped they are to understand the roles they're recruiting for and the people they're representing.
It's also a good reminder that recruitment doesn't happen in isolation.
Behind every job title is a production line, a factory, a technical challenge, a piece of equipment or a team trying to improve how something works.
Understanding that world helps us do our jobs better.
A big thank you to everyone we caught up with at the PPMA Show and to the businesses who took the time to show us around and talk us through what they're working on.
It's another useful reminder that sometimes the best way to understand an industry is to get off the laptop and onto the show floor.
