Nursery manager

Job description

Nursery Manager

Hertfordshire

£Dependent on experience

Are you an experienced grower who thrives in a hands‑on leadership role? Looking for the chance to take ownership of a well‑equipped nursery site, lead a committed team and ensure exceptional plant quality across a busy production environment?

This could be the perfect next step.

What's in it for you?

  • Competitive package based on experience
  • Health Shield, pension and flexibility where needed
  • A modern, well‑invested growing site with poly tunnels, reservoir, sub‑irrigation and trial areas
  • A supportive Production Manager and a stable on‑site team
  • A role focused on growing and leading people - not being stuck in the office

The Role

As Nursery Manager, you'll take full day‑to‑day responsibility for the site, its people, and the quality of the crops produced. You'll be the key decision‑maker on the ground, ensuring plants are grown, maintained and presented to the highest standards.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading, motivating and developing a team of full‑time and seasonal staff
  • Managing potting, shaping, stock presentation and general crop quality
  • Making hands‑on growing decisions across shrubs, perennials and 2L production
  • Planning and overseeing irrigation strategies
  • Monitoring crops for pests, diseases, nutrition and irrigation issues
  • Maintaining high standards of plant health, biosecurity and hygiene
  • Working with the Production Manager on rotations, space planning and seasonal schedules
  • Ensuring safe working practices, COSHH compliance and accurate record keeping
  • Supporting out‑of‑hours cover for irrigation and spray applications when required

This is a practical, site‑based leadership role - ideal for someone who wants to be out in the nursery, not behind a desk.

About You

You'll be a great fit if you are:

  • Experienced in nursery production, ideally with shrubs/perennials
  • Confident leading teams and setting high standards
  • Hands‑on, proactive and comfortable making independent decisions
  • Strong on plant health, irrigation and general growing practices
  • Organised, reliable and able to keep operations running smoothly
  • PA1/PA6 qualified (or willing to work towards it)

If you're currently a Team Leader, Supervisor or Assistant Manager ready for more responsibility, this could be a brilliant opportunity.
