Back British Farming: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How We Can Help

What is Back British Farming?

Back British Farmingis a campaign run by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) of England and Wales. It was launched in 2015 to celebrate, support, and raise awareness about the vital role British farmers play in feeding the nation and stewarding the countryside. Since it began in 2015, the campaign has grown in impact and visibility, now it’s up to over 44,000 NFU members and more than half a million campaign supporters.

What Does BBF Do? And Who Does It Help?

The campaign rallies farmers, growers, food-sector businesses, and the general public, presenting a joint voice to influence policymakers and enhance public appreciation for British agriculture. The goals for the campaign are to push for better policies to support UK farming and the UK’s overall food security. Promoting sustainability and high standards in farming, such as animal welfare and environmental care, are also top priority. Public campaigns such as “Buy British” slogans in supermarkets, petitions to ban sky lanterns (which can harm livestock) and the efforts to stop detrimental inheritance tax changes are also amongst the motives to support the organisation. The Organisation of the Back British Farming Day each year is to celebrate farmers, engage industry key stakeholders and highlight key agricultural issues.

The campaign supports British Farmers and Growers, by raising awareness and advocating for their needs. Consumers, by promoting transparency and pride in homegrown food as well as Rural communities, are reinforcing farming’s role in local economies and environments.
