Highlights from Four Oaks Trade Show 2025

We’ve just wrapped up another fantastic couple of days at Four Oaks, and (as trade shows always do) it’s reminded me why there’s nothing quite like meeting clients and candidates face-to-face. Over Tuesday and Wednesday, Sarah, Rae and I chatted with a real mix of people — from nursery managers and plant breeders to growers, agronomists, and crop protection specialists — as well as folks in plant development, fresh produce supply, and retail operations. This is what we noticed…

A few clear trends were running through our conversations. Innovation is booming, with protected cropping, automation, and data-driven growing systems really taking off. At the same time, skill gaps are real, as companies across the board are seeking talent. Sustainability is top of mind, with everyone considering how to balance commercial pressures with greener practices (peat-free is still taking a huge amount of brain power across the board). One of the key takeaways from the HortWeek Question Time panel featuring Adam McGowan (McLarens), Emma Birbeck (Fargro) and Hans de Putter (Danmar Logistics) was that resilience also matters; even amid economic uncertainty, businesses remain optimistic, particularly those exploring new varieties or diversifying their offerings.

Skills for the future

One topic that came up repeatedly was digital and technical skills. Whether it’s agronomists using precision data or nurseries trialling automation, it’s clear that the future of horticulture and fresh produce will require people who can combine practical know-how with tech smarts.

For us as recruiters, that’s a huge opportunity, and also a huge challenge. We’re helping businesses not only find the right talent today but also plan for the skills they’ll need tomorrow. That might mean thinking creatively about training, career development, or even hiring from adjacent industries. Something we’re constantly trying to stay ahead of the curve on.

Sarah said: “I’ve noticed quite a shift in mentality with a number of clients I’m working with this year. More are looking at which skills can be taught internally, and which transferable skills candidates bring that will help build teams for the future. It’s a refreshing approach, moving away from simply trying to match a CV to a job description.”

Looking ahead

Four Oaks 2025 reinforced something we already knew: the horticulture and fresh produce sectors are full of innovation and opportunity, but finding and keeping the right people will be key. We’re always proud to play a part in supporting businesses and candidates as they navigate these exciting, sometimes tricky, challenges.
