Working in Garden Centres...

over 1 year ago by Ben Woodward

Garden Centre recruitment specialist, Ben Woodward, attended two centres last week for some hands-on experience with staff across The British Garden Centre Group at Osterley and Winnersh.

The two days of shadowing bought up a common theme about how working in Garden Centres isn’t necessarily based on experience and qualifications, but passion and enthusiasm.

“I met a Plant Area Team Manager that began their career in journalism, but spent their own time learning about plants with it being an interest and hobby, and so transitioned over to a permanent full-time position at Osterley. The same goes for another Plant Manager who had taken time off from their Bank Manager role to raise a family, discovered a passion and enjoyment for gardening which led them to their current role. Both of these candidates may not appear obvious choices but their passion shines through which has made them successful in their roles.

The trip really showcased the breadth of opportunities available within Garden & Leisure, it’s not all plants! As well as the opportunities and directions that can arise for those that start their careers there. I spent time visiting people in roles such as;

  • EPOS Supervisor

  • Goods in supervisor

  • Shop floor supervisor

  • Gift shop supervisor

  • Landscaping

  • Chefs & restaurant managers

  • Various department managers

A Landscaping Manager who started as a Sunday worker and has now progressed into the Landscaping Department as a result of finding an interest and passion in the area, and so was given the resources to step up and manage the department. It’s clear there are fantastic opportunities in Garden Centres for those of any age or background.”
