Job description
Assistant Grower / Assistant Production Manager
Merseyside
£DOE
Got experience in commercial growing and ready for more responsibility?
Want to work somewhere where you'll be trusted, valued, and part of a real family business?
Looking for a hands-on role where you can see the results of your work every day?
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a sixth-generation family business with over 130 years of growing heritage.
Still based on its original site, the nursery is a much-loved local destination, known for its quality bedding plants, hanging baskets, and personal touch.
This is a business that takes pride in doing things properly - combining traditional horticultural knowledge with modern methods and genuine passion.
What's in it for you?
- Competitive salary
- Join a friendly, down-to-earth, family-run team.
- Opportunity to learn directly from highly experienced growers.
- Real influence over the quality and direction of production
- Standard pension and holiday entitlement
- Extended Christmas break (closed Christmas Eve - early January)
- Mostly Monday-Friday, with only a handful of weekend days during spring
- Chance to make a real impact with part of a long-established, respected business.
The Role
This is a hands-on, practical growing role with the opportunity to make a real impact as the business enters its next phase.
You'll work closely with the owners, supporting all aspects of growing and production across the glasshouses and polytunnels.
From propagation and transplanting to crop health and planning, you'll help keep everything running smoothly throughout the year.
Day to day, you'll:
- Support the day-to-day management of nursery production and growing schedules.
- Assist in planning propagation, transplanting, and crop timings for bedding and hanging basket production.
- Supervise and support 2-3 seasonal staff during the busy spring/summer months.
- Maintain high plant health standards, spotting and resolving issues early.
- Support with ordering growing media, chemicals, and consumables.
- Monitor stock levels and maintain accurate growing records.
- Operate and maintain nursery machinery, including irrigation systems and transplanters.
- Take on general site maintenance during quieter winter months.
- Work collaboratively with the wider team and uphold site safety standards.
It's a varied, physical role that'll suit someone who enjoys being in the greenhouse, getting stuck in, and taking real ownership of their work.
About You
- Experience working on a commercial growing nursery (bedding or pack plant experience ideal, but happy to train if you have experience with other crops)
- Confident with general crop husbandry, propagation, and irrigation
- Hands-on, organised, and practical with strong attention to detail
- Able to supervise and motivate a small seasonal team.
- Great communicator with a positive, respectful approach
- PA1, PA6, and/or forklift licence would be beneficial (training can be provided)
- Strong plant knowledge and a genuine passion for horticulture
- Comfortable working closely with a small, family-led team where everyone pulls together.
- You don't need decades of experience - just solid nursery know-how, common sense, and the right attitude.
