Assistant Garden Centre Manager
Location: West Sussex
Salary: Competitive (DOE)
Hours: 40 hours/week
About the Role
We're looking for an Assistant Manager to join a thriving independent garden centre in West Sussex.
This is a key leadership position, supporting the Garden Centre Manager and deputising in their absence. You'll take responsibility for core retail departments, with a strong focus on the plant area, ensuring high standards of presentation, customer service, and smooth day-to-day operations.
This position is only open to candidates with a garden/DIY retail background. Horticultural knowledge is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee key departments with a focus on the plant area, ensuring excellent product presentation and stock quality.
Supervise and support a team of 3-5 staff, depending on season.
Support the Plant Area Manager with daily operations and deputise during their absence.
Maintain high standards of merchandising, stock control, and customer experience.
Drive retail sales through strong plant knowledge and effective team leadership.
Work closely with other department leads to support overall centre performance.
What We're Looking For
Garden Centre Experience: Preferred, ideally within a plant area environment. Candidates from DIY retail backgrounds will also be considered.
Plant Knowledge: Essential - confidence in plant care, maintenance, and customer advice is a priority.
Leadership: Ability to supervise, motivate, and develop a small team in a fast-paced retail setting.
Commercial Awareness: Understanding of stock control, merchandising, and seasonal retail trends.
Customer Focus: Proactive and approachable, with a passion for delivering excellent service.
