Plant Area Manager & Buyer

Salary: £30,000 - £35,000+ (depending on experience)
Location: Hillingdon, West London
Contracted Hours:
Full-time, 5 days over 7 including alternate weekends.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take full ownership of the plant area, including product selection, plant care, displays, and customer experience.
  • Lead on plant buying, including sourcing stock and managing supplier relationships - with a view to eventually buying for a new online brand launching soon.
  • Focus on profitability, stock quality, and commercial displays to improve sales and customer engagement.
  • Work closely with long-standing team members (e.g., Alan - 40 years' tenure) to maintain standards and guide best practices.
  • Help drive business growth - centre currently turning over £2.5m with aspirations to reach £3.5m over the next 2 years.
  • Support or mentor existing team members and managers as part of a flat management structure (3-4 department managers currently).
  • Contribute to long-term planning and help shape structure.

Candidate Profile:

  • Must have strong horticultural experience, ideally with existing industry contacts - not suitable for junior or first-time managers.
  • Proven background in plant area management, including buying, merchandising, and team oversight.
  • Commercially focused, able to balance profit, quality, and customer satisfaction.
  • Comfortable in a fast-growing, independent garden centre environment with ambition to grow.
